Guided Tours of the Gephart Exhibit Trail
Holderness, NH – Squam Lakes Natural Science Center offers Wild Winter Walks for the 2012 winter season. These guided tours allow visitors to see the animals at the Science Center in their winter splendor.

A staff naturalist guides the walk along the Gephart Exhibit Trail, a three-quarter mile long nature trail featuring animals in natural enclosures. The naturalist discusses the many ways native animals are well-adapted for winter life in New Hampshire. Participants will see how animals like Red Fox, Bobcats, Mountain Lions, raptors and other native species adapt to winter weather. If weather conditions permit, participants will snowshoe along the trail. Snowshoes are available at no extra cost or participants can bring their own.

Participants can make a full day of winter fun with a Wild Winter Walk and lunch at Longhaul Farm. Longhaul Farm will offer a 10% discount on lunch to all Wild Winter Walk participants on the day of the event (lunch begins at noon).

Pre-registration is required for all Wild Winter Walks by calling 603-968-7194 or email info@nhnature.org. Cost for Wild Winter Walks: $10/member; $12/non-member

New Hampshire Motor Speedway turned over a new “green” leaf during the 2011 season, with the help of Waste Management, the speedway worked to manage and reduce waste while recovering valuable resources and creating renewable energy.

“The Magic Mile” and Waste Management reached several milestones this year on their way to a “greener” environment. Exactly what is the speedway saving?

So far, the track has saved 180,211 kW of power which is enough to provide energy to 15 homes for a year. The speedway recycled 1,266 gallons of oil, which can heat and cool 15 houses for an entire year. 84,000 gallons of fresh water was saved, that’s enough to meet the daily needs of 93 people for a year. The speedway has also planted 144 mature trees on property, which is enough to produce 1,784,100 sheets of newspaper.

“NHMS is going above and beyond the standard recycling efforts traditionally seen in the area,” said Jaren Naef of Waste Management. “They have started many new programs to help with their sustainability goals, including Single Stream Recycling, metal recycling, tire recycling, wood recycling, plastics, glass, paper and much more. There is a lot of time and effort put into running a race at the speedway, thousands of race fans are on site for days at a time, all generating massive amounts of waste. NHMS and WM have developed a comprehensive recycling plan that strengthens our business partnership and helps everyone reach their sustainability goals.”

“Green” is definitely a way of life not just for the speedway, but for NASCAR as well. “Going ‘green’ is not a fad or trend; it is an important component for any business on a day to day basis. It is not only the right thing to do for the environment, but also helps reduce costs in many different areas everywhere,” Naef added.

A brand new holiday event will light up the New Hampshire Motor Speedway this holiday season: Gift of Lights at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The speedway will become home to more than one million LED lights and hundreds of Christmas light displays. The inaugural season of this drive-through light park will begin Nov. 18 and run through Jan. 1.
After having success with previous light parks across the country, 3 Dudes Productions and Winterland, Inc. have joined forces to bring a festive holiday experience to New Hampshire. The park will create a festive atmosphere, allowing visitors to drive through more than one mile of Christmas lights, set up in various sparkling displays.

Based on the records of similar light parks, about 25,000 cars are expected to drive through during the season, bringing in about 120,000 visitors. The park will be open to visitors every night – including Christmas – from Nov. 18 – Jan. 1. Hours of operation are Sunday – Thursday, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 5:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. The cost is $15 per vehicle, and the first 15,000 vehicles to drive through this season will receive a gift bag with holiday values from the event’s sponsors.

For more information on Gift of Lights at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, visit www.newhampshiregiftoflights.com or find the Gift of Lights at New Hampshire Motor Speedway page on Facebook.

Here We Go Again! CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON PHASE II OF CHURCH LANDING EXPANSION

Meredith, N.H. – Project to Add 13 Lake View Rooms and Suites in Two New Buildings by July 2012

It’s official! We have broken ground on the newest addition to Church Landing. The Birch and Boathouse Lodges are being constructed on either side of the existing Lake Shore Cottage and will be connected by a covered cedar walkway.

The Inns & Spa at Mill Falls has broken ground to begin construction on Phase II of its Church Landing expansion. The new development will add 13 deluxe lake view rooms and suites in two new buildings. Named The Birch Lodge and The Boathouse Lodge, the new buildings are being constructed on either side of the existing Lake Shore Cottage which resides on the South end of Church Landing. The new buildings will be connected to the existing Church Landing by a covered cedar walkway. The construction is expected to be completed in July 2012.

All rooms will all offer spectacular lake views, balconies and screened porches. In addition, each room will have a fieldstone fireplace, indoor whirlpool bath, wet bar, double glass and tile shower, and a bathroom LCD TV.

“We are thrilled to begin construction on this part of our expansion project,” said Rusty McLear, president and CEO of The Inns & Spa at Mill Falls. “Church Landing at Mill Falls continues to be enjoyed by tourists and residents alike, and these additions will certainly enhance our guests’ experience.”

The expansion will also offer:
• A new lobby and game area
• A second indoor/outdoor infinity pool with two jacuzzi’s
• An outdoor fire-pit, a large sundeck with food and beverage service
• All buildings will be connected to each other with a covered cedar walkway
• New boat docks
• 186 feet of additional lake frontage

“We have a vast number of guests who regularly stay with us, and it’s exciting that each time they visit, we are adding more facilities and more options to consider, while keeping our focus on our core mission – unforgettable customer service,” said Gail Batstone, General Manager of The Inns & Spa at Mill Falls.

Samyn & D’Elia Architects of Ashland are heading up the design, and CCI Construction is handling the general contracting duties. Pat Sava Designs will be coordinating the interior, and the rooms will be decorated with dark wood in the Adirondack style.

Contributing banks that helped make this project possible are Laconia Savings Bank and Meredith Village Savings Bank.

The Inns & Spa at Mill Falls recently completed renovating the carport at Church Landing to accommodate more event space, including additional breakout rooms, vendor space and dining areas. The new facility, called “The Carriage House” added 1,700 additional square feet of meeting space and an expanded lobby area of 955 square feet, with fourteen-foot ceilings. The new facility offers expansive views of Lake Winnipesaukee.

The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro is pleased to welcome David Warren of Melvin Village on Thursday, August 25 for a free presentation at 7pm entitled “The S/S Mount Washington and World War II.”
“The history of the Mount Washington boat is an amazing story of survival against incredible odds,” indicated Mr. Warren.
The industrial revolution and the arrival of the railroads completely transformed the Lakes Region, and the Mount played an important role. The story of the Mount is particularly interesting as it is still in operation today and the public can take an enjoyable and picturesque ride around the lake on this historic boat.
The presentation will include a brief look at the Mount’s early history, and then concentrate on the many interesting things that happened during the war years. Included is a film made available by Jack Irwin, whose family has a long history on the lake, showing the old Mount in operation and the construction and launching of the new Mount. Part of the Mount’s story is the fire that destroyed the old Mount and its rebirth as a modern iron hull vessel.
One of the new Museum displays include some of the marine diesel engine parts salvaged from the 2009 refurbishing of the Mount’s engine, generously donated by the Winnipesaukee Flagship Company and coordinated by Ted and Robert Valpey.
Guests are welcome to enjoy refreshments after the presentation and view the exhibits on display. This is the last program of the 2011 Lecture Series and is sponsored by the Wolfeboro Inn and the Taylor Community.
David Warren is an historical sleuth and avid ship modeler whose interest in New Hampshire history grew from his 55 year hobby building ship models. He created the boat museum’s new Steamboat History Center that includes many of his models of historic boats on Lake Winnipesaukee and the history behind them. His articles have appeared in many regional newspapers and magazines. His current project is a large scale model of the old Uncle Sam Mailboat, which he is building under guidance from her former pilot, Vernon Cotton. David lives in Melvin Village with his wife, Rae Lynn.
Mr. Warren has also been instrumental in the creation of many of the hands-on educational games and activities to make children’s visits to the museum interesting. The new Family Admission Ticket provides a discounted rate to encourage the whole family to come and tour the Museum.
The Museum is open daily through Columbus Day Weekend, Monday through Saturday 10am-4pm, and Sunday 12-4pm. Housed in the historic Allen “A” Resort’s original dance hall, it is located at 399 Center Street (Route 28/109 North), two miles from downtown Wolfeboro. Other upcoming events include the 7th biennial Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta on September 16-17 on Wolfeboro Bay, Lake Winnipesaukee. For further information, contact the Museum at 603-569-4554, museum@nhbm.org, visit their web site at nhbm.org, or follow them on Facebook.

Ten questions and answers from LRTA staff

It’s been a long good-bye to winter. Most, if not all, of the New Hampshire local folk are ready for some warmer temps and for the snow to melt. But before you see green fields and can swim in Lake Winnipesaukee, there is New Hampshire mud season to contend with. There are some things that are inevitable, and with the rising temps and melting snow, comes mud season.

If you are thinking of visiting New Hampshire this spring, don’t let the word “mud” scare you off. The Lakes Region has a lot to offer, and it just might be the best time of year to visit. You will find some events and venues that are unique only to New Hampshire and may very well be at an off-season rate. But come prepared for any type of weather. The locals often joke: If you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes. So pack for most anything from 60 and sunny to 30 and snowing.

For some of the best and comprehensive options for the Lakes and Mountains of New Hampshire, visit the Lakes Region Tourism Association (LRTA) for options from lodging and dining, to events and discounts at www.lakesregion.org. Here, the travel councilors at LRTA have shared questions they have received about vacationing during mud season.

1. Do the NH locals truly like the mud? Believe it or not, yes, many do like the mud. But the moose LOVE the mud. So it’s a great time of season to take a moose tour with the pros at Pemi Valley Moose Tours (Lincoln). The black bear is also a well-known New Hampshire animal that will emerge from their dens in the spring. Clark’s Trading Post (Lincoln) is a safe, educational, and fun way to learn about the New Hampshire way for this native creature.

2. Does mud season mean mud skiing? No, mud season means spring skiing conditions. Imagine skiing/boarding with just a tee shirt or a light wind-breaker. Or try your hand skiing across slushy water at a “Pond Skim Party” – don’t forget your change of clothes! Even if you are not a skier, you are sure to laugh and enjoy the annual pond skimming competitions held at most NH ski resorts.

3. How much mud should I expect to encounter? Well, that all depends on how much you like the mud. If you like to play in the mud, there are activities such as hiking and mountain biking. If you prefer to not play in the mud, there are several options such as museums, shopping, full service spas, theatrical, comedic and concert performances, arcades, and bowling. For your adventurous side, you can find such activities as a zip line, high ropes courses, and even a bungee jumping trampoline. There are activities for the young and old, day and night.

4. Does “Mud Season” also mean “Bug Season”? Actually, not at all. Typically there are not any bugs to hinder your memorable New Hampshire mud season experience. But honestly, it does depend on the spring water and temperatures. There are a variety of local stores that can supply you with bug deterrents, if need-be.

5. We are looking to spend some time with our kids in NH during April vacation – any ideas? Phew, where to start. There are some amazing opportunities to enjoy NH in the spring season. The best part is, it tends to be not so busy, so getting a reservation is easy. We have found that most kids, young and old, love the “make your own sundae” at the infamous Kellerhaus (Weirs Beach) or the largest arcade in the world, Funspot (Weirs Beach), or the indoor climbing wall at Logs-of-Fun (Weirs Beach) no matter what the weather. And, you might just find off-season discounts at certain venues. Many of the summer attractions begin weekend hours in April and May.

6. We are looking for some quiet time away for our anniversary, what would you recommend? Some unique and memorable opportunities are just around the corner. How about browsing an art gallery followed by a storytelling dinner at The Corner House Inn (Ctr Sandwich), a reservation at the spa, or a charter boat on Lake Winnipesaukee? New Hampshire is proud to offer an amazing selection of award winning dining options, romantic country inns, and bed & breakfasts. Depending on the dates you are coming, there are live shows such as a comedy night, concerts, live music in the local taverns and theatrical performances.

7. Spring skiing is probably great in NH, but I am not a skier. What else is there to do? Let’s explore some options, depending on your interest. There is an Annual Winni Fishing Derby on Lake Winnipesaukee mid-May. Okay, so fishing is not your fancy? That’s fine, how about shopping or renting a charter boat? Don’t forget the Lakes Region of New Hampshire is a known hub for music, theater and entertainment at several venues.

8. Is NH mud season an opportunity to find some great deals in the lakes region? Absolutely! There are some great package deals posted on www.LakesRegion.org – browse through Relaxation & Romance; Maple & Mud; Tax-Free Shopping; Ski and Stay; Family Fun; Enrichment…. There are even some RED HOT DEALS posted that boast a 30% plus savings!

9. My husband is have his big 50th Birthday the end of April, and we want to do something different, yet memorable. We have you covered! How about a zip line adventure? The Greater Lakes Region of New Hampshire has over half a dozen, each with a different experience and thrill. Follow that with dinner and comedy night or performance and then retreat to a quiet elegant private suite overlooking the Lake. Don’t forget to book the spa!

10. Spring in NH is known for Maple Syrup. What does that mean? When the temperature starts to go up, the sap in the trees start to run. That means the long hours for those that boil and produce that sweet tasting, award winning, pure NH made maple syrup have begun. Several local sugarhouses are open to the public allowing you to see how maple products are made. Don’t forget to bring a quart home!
